A bit more Sion Simon

"Charlie Whelan... is the only man left in the kingdom who still really believes that Gordon Brown will one day be prime minister. He is the last descendant of a once proud line, the final keeper of the one true faith." Sion Simon, The Spectator, March 14 1998.

He has shot himself in the foot, I suspect. One or two of his colleagues are a little embarrassed. Not sure that his reference to Samantha Cameron will win him too many friends either.

The worst thing the Tories can do is to "react angrily" to his piece of satire. They should simply respond with a "Sion who?"

And talking of embarrassing attempts to appeal to 'da yoof' vote, what does Sion Simon look like?

He looks like a slightly slimmer and slightly younger Michael Moore; although not so right wing of course.

la boheme - Well spotted! And you're right.

What leads people to do things like this? Did he really think that was funny and he was going to be slapped on the back and congratulated? I could never stand him when he was writing for The Telegraph.

If Tories wanted to be really mean - and why not? - they could bring in some leftie irrelevance. I don't mean Simon himself, but say something like, "Well,I don't want to criticise him. He suffers from a degenerative eye disease, you know, and is going to end up blind. So, no comment." Pity's a real killer.

Looks like Simon has been left high and dry. Tom Watson has apologised.
