Sandi Toksvig

Today’s Feedback on Radio 4 featured a listener who took issue with a recent edition of the travel programme Excess Baggage in which presenter Sandi Toksvig visited Sudan(*) :
“There is a genocidal civil war going on in Sudan, with government-backed forces murdering the people of the Darfur region. Hundreds of thousands of Darfur people have been killed or displaced. Toksvig’s summing up of Sudan as a wonderful place to visit for tourists - as long as they don’t go where the Sudanese government doesn’t want them to go - quite frankly stinks. They can gawp at ancient monuments, buy loads of souvenirs, prop up the killers of the Darfur people, but not go and see the culture of the people the government wishes to exterminate.”
Toksvig responded:
“I think that you can’t necessarily choose your country to visit because of its human rights issues. If we were to all do that we would be pretty limited in our choice of countries to go to. For my money it would almost certainly exclude the United States...”
With views like this, Toksvig isn’t short of work at the BBC. Apart from Excess Baggage, she also presents the News Quiz (where she spends most of her time laughing at her own jokes), and is a regular guest on the BBC's many panel shows. The Beeb takes good care of its leftie comedians.

(*) Laban at Biased BBC commented on Toksvig's Sudan visit last month.

Update 8pm.This was Toksvig on tonight’s News Quiz :
“It was a report subtitled America’s National Intelligence Estimate - which I’m going to guess is quite low.”
Apart from anything else she’s wrong about the name. “National Intelligence Estimate” (not “America’s National Intelligence Estimate”) is the umbrella title given to all such reports into particular security issues. She had to change the title to fit her crappy little joke about Americans being stupid.

How does one fight such moonbattery? Even for a lefty, that statement is the statement of a nut job.

If she's ever somewhere and needs to be rescued by well-organised, well-funded, well-trained military might, I hope she remembers to dial the number of the Sudanese air force.

The Khartoum regime has exterminated hundreds of thousands of its own people and Sandi blithely describes this as a "human rights issue".

She is either (a) slightly doolally or (b) a master of the understatement.

I can only assume she would have done the same with apartheid-era South Africa and would have happily visited at the licence-payers' expense. After all, Sandi, you can’t necessarily choose your country to visit because of its human rights issues, can you?

I have a personal conundrum here-: She's a lefty 'comedienne' (yawn - why is their material just so predictably predictable?) but she is also Danish. I like the Danish. I like the way they didn't suffer from the boycott by the Islamists.

Wonder what her views were on the whole Motoon and subsequent boycott of Danish produce were?

Apologies for last sentence. Didn't read well at all. You know what I mean. Blame it on the err lemonade that I'm drinking.

I have often wondered what the point of Sandi Toksvig is.

I'm afraid I have concluded that she must know something about someone high up at the BBC.

Does anyone have an email address to which we can write asking her for her "safe" countries? Would Venezuela be one, for example?

Is Alan Coren still on the News Quiz? Now he was funny - but not funny enough to make up for all those dim smug leftwing "alternative" comedians with their predictable "takes" on the week's news

An interesting optical illusion, Sandi Toksvig. It doesn't look that way, but her head is fatter than her arse.
