Old Jokes Revisited

First Man: Who's that with the Papua New Guinea High Commissioner?

Second Man: Her lunch.

BBC:
Tory MP Boris Johnson - famed for apologising to the city of Liverpool - appears to have gone one better and offended an entire country.

Mr Johnson has been forced to apologise to Papua New Guinea after he linked it to "cannibalism and chief-killing".

It wasn't a joke; it was a quip. The second man was Noel Coward.

(Also, it was Queen Salote of Tonga. A large woman.)

And what an apology it was - better than his insult!

"I meant no insult to the people of Papua New Guinea who I'm sure lead lives of blameless bourgeois domesticity in common with the rest of us."

Yeah, but apart from that...

La Boheme - agreed, it's a great apology.

And the occasion was Queen Salote riding in a barouche down the Mall for Queen Elizabeth's Coronation. She had a little tiny gentleman sitting next to her. Noel Coward and a friend were observing the parade from a window.

It's in Coward's biography.

Bombscare Boris, Toryboy extraordinaire.

Is it possible that just one time he might be able to open his mouth without sounding like an utter and total prat?

Verity (and how pleased am I to have got a Verity reply!):

Unfortunately, the number of people in the country who still think he's clever you could count on the fingers of a badly mutilated hand. He's a comic sideshow. I don't want to sound like a NuLab control freak, but I cringe every time he opens his oafish gob.

Oafish gob?

Not intelligent?

Oh ye of little brain...

I never said he isn't intelligent. I said he acts like an oaf because it attracts oaf-admirers everywhere. I am tired of his oafish, bemused, perplexed act.

Boris is excellent, he severely pisses off lefties.

That's good enough for me.

If anyone else had made those comments, it wouldn't have made the headlines. Perhaps he could do with a new researcher.

Verity - my comment of 11.55 was in response to anonymous (8.58) not to you.

BoJo lulls (lefties in particular) into a false sense of superiority-ship (a word I have just made up) by his bumbling facade - but these people should beware - beneath that facade lurks an extremely intelligent man. The only thing he has done which I thought was stupid was to go up to Liverpool and "apologise" to the appalling inhabitants thereof.
