BBC UN Promotions present...

Radio Five Live’s Simon Mayo show was in New York this afternoon for a UN special, and by UN special I mean three hours of people telling us how special the UN is. I emailed the following (emphasis added here):
Could you get one of your many UN cheerleaders to comment on this assessment of the organisation by columnist Mark Steyn?
"the UN is a shamefully squalid organization whose corruption is almost impossible to exaggerate… If you don’t want to bulk up your pension by skimming the Oil-for-Food program, no need to worry. Whatever your bag, the UN can find somewhere that suits—in West Africa, it’s Sex-for-Food, with aid workers demanding sexual services from locals as young as four; in Cambodia, it’s drug dealing; in Kenya, it’s the refugee extortion racket; in the Balkans, sex slaves. On a UN peace mission, everyone gets his piece."
Here’s what Mayo said:

Maybe your UN cheerleaders might like to comment on this assessment of the organisation by columnist Mark Steyn: “the UN is a shamefully squalid organization whose corruption is almost impossible to exaggerate… If you don’t want to bulk up your pension by skimming the Oil-for-Food program, no need to worry. Whatever your bag, the UN can find somewhere that suits.”
And there’s much more in that ilk...
He then introduced Kofi Annan’s Director of Communications Edward Mortimer - just the person to ask! But of course he wasn't asked. In fact, there were no attempts to ask anyone about the points I'd tried to raise. Throughout the broadcast Mayo's line of questioning ran the full gamut of the BBC UN reporter's handbook - from "Tell us why the UN is great" to "Tell us why those who don't think the UN is great are wrong".

DFH - proud to be "in that ilk".

I gave up on Mayo a while back. In fact, I never listen to R5L!

He has so many fans on the R5L message boards but his programme is banal in the extreme.

It surprises me not one jot that the BBC is doing PR puffery for the UN.

Well done for at least getting your Mark Steyn quote on air.

The whole programme was asslicking to the nth degree
